CT. sad worrysome news

From: NLS (jsperrazza@snet.net) | Date: 2003-07-06 18:47:24 UTC-04:00
This afternoon I met Bluebird in the Old Lyme Commuter parking lot at
exit 70 off I 95. We drove off in my car searching for a new letterbox
box and when we returned to her car were so saddened to see her car
window smashed and her new camera and purse gone. When I left her she
was in the Police car making out a report. She was so brave and I know
how terribly upset she is. I wish I could make it all better, but an
alert to all about this ~ is about all I can do. We leave one car in
this lot often. We hope this never happens to anyone else.

I'm so sorry to hear of Bluebird's misfortune! That has always been a
concern of mine. What should one do? Not wise to carry credit cards
and cash while hiking. Hard to hide safely in one's car. To answer my
own questiom, I need to make up an i.d. card to carry with me while
hiking.

I always try to carry my drivers license and one credit card, along with my cell phone. I leave my purse and anything of value in the trunk so at least it is not visible at a glance.
My car was broken into in my own driveway once and I'm sorry you have to go through the hassle of it now.

I'm so sorry to hear about the break-in.

One thing that I have been told by police a couple of times (when some of our
visitors had their cars broken into) is to never leave anything in the
seating area of the car, but to put anything valuable into the trunk.

They said that even if a purse or wallet is out of sight, robbers will often
still break in and reach around typical hiding areas (eg under the seat, in
the glove box or console), but that they will almost never break into the trunk.

I have a van with no trunk area, but I try to hide valuables under 'yucky'
things like used food wrappers, or in my box of car essentials like oil and
washer fluid.

It is so infuriating that some folks are so brazen. All the break-ins I have
witnessed (when very upset people would come into the nature center asking to
call the police) were "smash and grab" type. The police said sometimes they
break in even when there are people nearby.

Again, I'm sorry for all the aggravation. I hope they catch the thief.
